Having talked about it for some considerable time, Stephen Whale and Darren English have finally planned their climb of Mount Kilimanjaro. They are going to attempt the ascent as part of a six-day climb starting on Tuesday 2nd September. In order to provide them with an added incentive to achieve their ambition they have decided to raise funds for two charities - Jersey Hospice Care and the Mangima Community Health Care Centre in Kenya. These choices reflect the 30-year link that Caversham has with Jersey and East Africa.
The work of the Hospice in Jersey in catering for the terminally ill is well known. We have a particular affinity with their work because of the support they were able to offer to our colleague Jay Morris who died tragically of cancer in 2003. Running the Hospice is expensive with daily costs now exceeding £5,500. The vast majority of the money they need comes from donations, legacies and fund raising events.
The Mangima Community Health Centre is located in the Rachuonya District in Western Kenya. The centre serves approximately 25,000 people providing basic healthcare, HIV/Aids counselling, family planning and a post and ante-natal clinic as well as offering immunisation against a wide variety of diseases. It is staffed by volunteers and funded entirely by donations.
Stephen and Darren are covering all of the costs associated with the climb including travel to and from Africa. This means that every penny they are able to collect will go directly to the charities.
We hope you will agree that the work of Jersey Hospice Care and Mangima Community Health Care is vital in trying to improve the lives of individuals who through no fault of their own, face some enormous challenges.
If you would like to make a donation, you can send a cheque made payable to “Kilimanjaro Challenge” – a specially designated account into which all monies will be paid. When Stephen and Darren return from their trip, the donations will be divided equally between the two charities.
We will be providing updates on the fund raising, their training and of their actual climb over the next two months.
